Why Karan Johar Sold 50% of Dharma Productions to Adar Poonawalla
The real reason behind Karan Johar’s surprising decision to sell 50% of Dharma Productions to Adar Poonawalla has finally been revealed—here’s the inside scoop.

Last year, Karan Johar teamed up with Serum Institute CEO Adar Poonawalla. For an incredible Rs 1,000 crore, the filmmaker sold the wealthy businessman a 50% share in Dharma Productions. KJo recently disclosed the true motivation behind making such a significant choice in an interview. Continue reading!

Karan Johar recently discussed the need for funding to develop his production company, Dharma Productions, on Raj Shamani's podcast. According to the director-producer, they realised in 2023 that they needed to scale, and it would have taken them an additional five to seven years to do so naturally.

"I needed the money to grow," he said, so he sold Adar Poonawalla a 50% share in Dharma Productions for an outrageous Rs 1,000 crore. Speaking about their partnership, the creator of Rocky Aur Rani Kii Prem Kahaani said he is thrilled to have Adar as a partner. He is a lovely person with keen intuition.

Since they partnered, he feels responsible for the projects he funds because the money belongs to someone else. As the saying goes, "I feel accountable; kisi aur ke paise hai, mujhey success paana hai, profitability increase karni hai." It's someone else’s money. The director of Kuch Kuch Hota Hai stated, "I have to succeed and boost the profitability."

Karan said it was simple to choose to work with his best friend, Natasha Poonawalla's husband, Adar, during his presence at the CNBC-TV18 Global Leadership Summit. According to Johar and Apurva, CEO of Dharma Productions, Adar was the perfect partner to help propel their production company to new heights. He also made amusing jokes about changing the company's name to Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Serum or Pharma Productions.

For the unknown, Dharma Productions was founded in 1976 by Yash Johar and is now helmed by his son Karan Johar. Kal Ho Naa Ho, Dostana, Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani, Badrinath Ki Dulhania, Raazi, and Brahmāstra: Part One – Shiva are just a few of the popular films that KJo has produced under the umbrella.

He recently provided funding for Kesari Chapter 2: The Untold Story of Jallianwala Bagh, which starred Ananya Panday, R. Madhavan, and Akshay Kumar.
