Sorry, Baby | Official Trailer HD | A24
This year's Sundance Film Festival saw several buzz-generating films, but few departed Utah with more positive reviews than Eva Victor's Sorry, Baby. The film, which was directed by a former cast member of Billions, who first gained notoriety online through a string of viral videos, won the Waldo Salt Screenwriting Award at the festival and received praise from several critics.
A24 posted the first trailer for the movie online this morning, giving viewers who aren't attending the festival a preview of what Victor has been up to. In addition to Victor's self-directed performance as Agnes, there are tidbits of the film's stellar supporting cast, which includes Naomi Ackie and the always amazing John Carroll Lynch. (A very cute kitty is also present.) The interactions between Agnes and those around her, particularly her best friend Lydie (Ackie), are the highlight, at least based on the trailer's small snatches. Even in these little moments, the shared hidden rituals of friendship are captured.
This type of trailer is strong on sentimental, humorous sentiments and weak on plot—all we get from Agnes's text is, "Something pretty bad happened to me," however, it's easy to figure out at least some of the story from context cues. At the very least, it has us eager to watch the entire movie when it opens in a few theatres on June 27 and then across the country on July 18.
