Delhi Capitals have taken significant strides in preparation for the 2025 IPL season by unveiling their new coaching staff on Thursday. Former India cricketers Hemang Badani and Venugopal Rao have been appointed as the team’s Head Coach and Director of Cricket, respectively, marking a new era for the franchise. This announcement also sees Venugopal Rao replacing Sourav Ganguly, who had held the Director of Cricket position previously.
Hemang Badani’s Coaching Journey
Hemang Badani, aged 47, brings with him a wealth of experience, both as a player and coach. Having represented India in four Test matches and 40 ODIs, Badani has transitioned into a successful coach with a proven track record across various leagues around the world. From 2021 to 2023, he served as the fielding coach for Sunrisers Hyderabad and later as a batting coach, showcasing his versatility in coaching different aspects of the game. Badani’s accomplishments include leading the Jaffna Kings to back-to-back titles in the Lankan Premier League and playing a crucial role as the batting coach for the Sunrisers Eastern Cape during their victorious inaugural SA20 campaign.
In the most recent season, Badani was the head coach of Dubai Capitals, guiding them to the final of the International League T20 (ILT20). His leadership and coaching expertise have been lauded by both players and management, making him a top choice for Delhi Capitals.
Upon his appointment, Badani expressed his excitement, stating, “It’s my absolute honor to be joining Delhi Capitals, and I’m deeply grateful to our owners for trusting me with the job. With the mega auction around the corner, my job, in collaboration with the rest of our coaching staff, is cut out. I can’t wait to get started.”
Venugopal Rao’s Leadership Role
Venugopal Rao, who has previously played 16 ODIs for India, brings a similar level of experience to his new role. Having played in the IPL for the Deccan Chargers, where he was part of the 2009 IPL-winning squad, Rao’s familiarity with the IPL and Delhi Capitals is extensive. He also played three seasons for the Delhi Daredevils, the former avatar of Delhi Capitals. Rao’s previous involvement with Dubai Capitals as a mentor and later as Director of Cricket further cements his credentials in team leadership and strategy.
“My association with the franchise has been a long-standing one, and I am thankful for the trust our owners have placed in me by offering me this role,” said Rao. “I look forward to this new challenge ahead of a new IPL cycle.”
A Fresh Chapter for Delhi Capitals
The appointment of Badani and Rao comes as Delhi Capitals prepare for a new IPL cycle, with hopes of returning to their winning ways. After finishing as runners-up in the 2021 edition, the Capitals have struggled to reach the playoffs in the subsequent seasons. However, with a new coaching staff in place, the team is optimistic about reversing its fortunes.
