In an extraordinary display of enthusiasm for distinctive vehicle registration numbers, Kerala's Motor Vehicles Department (MVD) recently auctioned the '0007' license plate for a staggering ₹45.99 lakh. This online auction, held on April 7, saw intense competition among bidders, ultimately setting a new record for the most expensive fancy number ever sold in the state.
The bidding commenced with an initial booking price of ₹25,000, attracting five participants. As the auction progressed, the bids escalated rapidly, with the final two contenders pushing the price to unprecedented heights. The winning bid of ₹45.99 lakh surpassed the previous high of ₹44.84 lakh, reflecting the immense value placed on unique number plates by vehicle enthusiasts in Kerala.

This trend of investing heavily in distinctive registration numbers is not new to Kerala. In 2018, Malayalam film star Prithviraj Sukumaran secured the 'KL 07 CN 1' number for his Lamborghini Huracan by bidding ₹7 lakh. Similarly, in 2024, a resident from Thiruvalla paid ₹7.85 lakh for the 'KL 27 M 7777' plate for her Land Rover Defender.
The MVD's auction process allows interested individuals to book fancy numbers online through the Parivahan website, with base prices ranging from ₹3,000 to ₹1 lakh, depending on the number's perceived value. This system has proven to be a significant revenue generator for the state, with the Ernakulam Regional Transport Office contributing ₹11.84 crore to the state exchequer from such auctions between 2017 and 2022.
While some may view these expenditures as extravagant, for many, owning a unique number plate is a symbol of status and personalization, adding a distinctive touch to their prized vehicles.
