The film explores the breakdown of an ideal marriage in its retelling of the 1989 cult classic The War of the Roses, which was based on Warren Adler's novel. Ivy (Colman) and Theo Rose (Cumberbatch) appear to have it all: handsome kids, successful careers, and the kind of home that makes it into architectural publications. But what's underneath the façade? The fissures are forming, then blowing up.
The once-golden couple turns into acrimonious rivals in a humorously intensifying struggle of egos, ambition, and insanely passive-aggressive confrontations as Theo's career takes a nosedive and Ivy's star keeps rising. Imagine flying plates, Shakespearean-biting verbal insults, and smiling legal threats.
As the Roses exchange love for hatred, the film, which was written by Oscar-nominated screenwriter Tony McNamara (The Favourite, Poor Things), combines heart-stopping moments with incisive satire. Andy Samberg, Allison Janney, Kate McKinnon, Belinda Bromilow, Sunita Mani, Ncuti Gatwa, Jamie Demetriou, and Zoë Chao complete the all-star cast. They are all bringing their best comic skills to this deliciously awkward domestic conflict zone.
The Roses are ideally positioned to strike a balance between scathing humour and emotional depth under the direction of Jay Roach, the creative force behind Bombshell, Trumbo, and the Austin Powers franchise.
According to the trailer, love has officially left the building and begun throwing kitchenware when The Roses opens in theatres on August 29, 2025.
