The first trailer for Ari Aster's highly anticipated black comedy western, Eddington, from Midsommar, has been made public. Set in May 2020, the film, which will have its Cannes premiere next month, centres on a confrontation between the mayor of a small New Mexico town running for reelection and the sheriff of the town.

Pedro Pascal is the mayor, Joaquin Phoenix is the sheriff, and Emma Stone is his wife. We witness videos of the main protagonists in quarantine on social media, and Austin Butler plays a captivating preacher whose moving sermons we watch on YouTube and Instagram.

Aster's first feature, the horror picture Hereditary, was one of the highest grossing films of 2018 and a huge smash at Sundance. While 2023's Beau is Afraid, which also starred Phoenix, was less well received, his follow-up, Midsommar, was praised and did well at the box office.
