The Amateur | Official Trailer
Rami Malek's character, CIA cryptographer Charles Heller, is shown in the Amateur trailer leading a contented and uninterested existence with his wife, Rachel Brosnahan. He appears to be a typical business employee in the opening few seconds of the video, sending the CIA cryptic information without getting bogged down in the specifics.
Ever ponder what they do with whatever you unearth for them? Do you never wonder? In the trailer, Malek is asked by Brosnahan. "I don't do that. I have to have faith that the CIA will make the correct decision. The latter responds, "Maybe it's better not to know." The scenario shifts to Malek learning about his wife's murder via a news program following their final goodbye. At that point, things start to go wrong!
As the title suggests, Heller, a lifelong computer geek, was devastated by his wife's passing and chose to target a terrorist organisation in order to get revenge. He insists on being involved and asks for "mission-specific information" even though the CIA tries to persuade him to let them handle the issue.
Despite learning how to fire and kill, the amateur appears to be a complete failure. "No matter how much I train you, you will never be able to do what I do. Laurence Fishburne's character, the trainer, informs the main character, "Charlie, you're just not a killer." However, Malek’s character uses his geekiness to develop cunning techniques to get back at her wife’s murderers.
Robert Littell's 1981 novel served as the inspiration for James Hawes' Slow Horses movie. According to the official synopsis, it centres on a “CIA cryptographer, who manages to bribe his agency into training him to allow him go after a bunch of terrorists who killed his wife in London."
Following the release of The Little Things in 2021, this is Malek's second action thriller. In the same year, he starred in Daniel Craig's adventure action movie No Time to Die. In 2023, he also made a noteworthy appearance in the Oscar-winning movie Oppenheimer.
