Alan Ritchson and his wife Catherine are done, twenty years in.

The two put out a joint statement on Instagram Saturday, the kind written to close a chapter without slamming the door. "After twenty years together, Cat and I have decided to end our marriage and continue alongside one another in a different way," it read. "We grew up together. We built a life and a family together. And we are raising three incredible boys who will always be the center of our world."

They have three sons together. The statement leaned hard on that fact, framing the split as a decision made with the kids in mind rather than against them. "Nothing can diminish what these years have meant to us," the couple wrote, "or the love and respect we will always share." They called friendship and co-parenting the best gift they could give each other and their boys right now.

But TMZ reported this wasn't a sudden call. Citing legal documents, the outlet said Ritchson actually filed for divorce back in December, and that the couple reconciled in March before arriving here anyway. That timeline complicates the tidy Saturday-morning framing a little. Twenty years of marriage rarely end on the day of the announcement, and this one apparently had a false start already behind it.

Ritchson and Catherine go back to a ballet class in their teens, a mutual friend reconnecting them years later before they married in 2006. He marked their fifteenth anniversary in 2021 with an Instagram post about "precarious highs and suffocating lows" and still holding hands. Their sons, Calem, Edan and Amory, are now somewhere between ten and thirteen depending on which outlet's birth years you trust, and the family had reportedly relocated to Philadelphia while Ritchson shot Reacher Season 4.

Catherine posted from Philadelphia last month with the family. By Thursday, she was posting a solo selfie about a trip built around art and things that "resonate," which reads differently in hindsight.

This lands in a rough stretch for Ritchson generally. He got into a physical altercation with a neighbor back in March, nobody was charged, and he later called it the scariest thing he'd been through on a podcast in July. None of that is alleged to connect to the marriage. It's just the backdrop the split arrives against.

The statement's final ask was simple: privacy, for the sake of the kids. Whether the internet grants that is its own separate question, and given how the Reacher fandom talks, an open one.
