Alia Bhatt has produced films before. She hasn't produced one where she isn't in a single frame and neither is anyone else the audience already recognises. Don't Be Shy, the Prime Video Original dropping its trailer this week, puts its entire romantic core in the hands of four actors who have never appeared in a film until now.

The story follows Shyamili 'Shy' Das, a young woman whose neatly arranged life comes apart, and the tangle she lands in in between her, an old flame named Mayank, and Dhruv, the childhood friend she's been estranged from. Then Tara shows up and complicates things further. It's a shape familiar to anyone who grew up on coming-of-age romances, four people, overlapping histories, one messy stretch of adulthood nobody warned them about.

What's notable is who's playing it. Aarushi Bajaj is Shy, Piyush Khati is Mayank, Ansh Duggal is Dhruv, Bianca Arora is Tara, none of them with a screen credit before this. Kunaal Roy Kapur, Anurag Basu, Neha Dhupia and Anju Alva Naik round out the supporting cast, which does the job of anchoring a project that's otherwise leaning entirely on new faces.

Writer-director Sreeti Mukerji told Bollywood Hungama the film grew out of nostalgia for the kind of movies she watched growing up, the ones she still returns to "when I want to feel safe, comforted, and entertained." She called it a tribute to that stretch of life when you're technically an adult but still figuring out the basics, and thanked Alia and Shaheen Bhatt for backing a story she wanted to tell her way.

The cast, for their part, are treating the moment with the weight you'd expect from people about to be seen by the world for the first time. Ansh Duggal, for whom this is a first film full stop, said there's something surreal about knowing it's about to be watched by audiences everywhere, calling himself "nervous, excited, and just incredibly grateful." Aarushi Bajaj said stepping into a character so unlike herself came with its own weight, a responsibility to get Shy's arc right. Piyush Khati talked about finding pieces of himself inside Mayank he didn't expect, and about the four of them going from strangers figuring things out together to actors with a finished film. Bianca Arora said playing Tara gave her permission to be more expressive on camera than she's used to.

The bet here isn't subtle. Eternal Sunshine Productions, the Bhatt sisters' banner, is putting its money on writing and casting instinct rather than star power, on a Prime Video platform that reaches over 240 countries. Don't Be Shy releases in Hindi with English subtitles on September 25, and how it performs will say something about whether audiences will show up for young-adult romance without a single familiar face pulling them in.
