Amitabh Bachchan did not retire. He went to sleep. That, in essence, is the clarification the 83-year-old actor has now put out after a single line on his blog set off a round of retirement speculation.

It started when Bachchan wrote that it was "late, time to retire." Read literally by anyone scrolling past it, that could mean exactly what it sounds like. Read the way Bachchan meant it, it meant he was heading to bed. The gap between those two readings was apparently wide enough for the rumour mill to run with the first one.

Bachchan's response, posted with a newspaper clipping attached, did not hold back on who he thought was responsible for the confusion. "I wrote in the blog.. 'it's late, time to retire.. ' which we all know means retire to bed it's late.. And this is the Media - the CONSCIENCE of a NATION - THE ULTIMATE INFORMER!!" he wrote, the sarcasm doing a lot of the work.

He followed it up in Hindi, spelling out the point so there was no room left for a second round of misreading. "Ji nahin huzoor, main kaam se retire nahin ho raha hoon. Angrezi mein iska matlab hota hai main ab sone jaa raha hoon. Aur wahan maanyavar aapko aane ka nimantran nahin hai," he added — no sir, he is not retiring from work, retire in English just means going to sleep, and nobody's invited to that.

So, work continues. Bachchan is currently in the middle of hosting season 18 of Kaun Banega Crorepati, the show he has anchored on and off since it first premiered in 2000. This run began August 10 and airs Monday to Friday at 9 pm on Sony Entertainment Television, with episodes streaming on Sony LIV as well.

An upcoming episode has him fielding a question about his wife, actor and Rajya Sabha MP Jaya Bachchan, specifically whether he has ever had to wait for her before heading out somewhere. Calling it a good question, Bachchan reveals a trick he uses to keep them on schedule. If they need to leave for a wedding at 6 pm, he tells her it's at 5. That way, he says, she starts getting ready with enough time to spare, a small domestic hack from a man who has spent decades managing far bigger productions than a wedding baraat.

On the big screen, Bachchan was last seen in 2024's Vettaiyan alongside Rajinikanth. There's no word yet on his next film project, but with KBC 18 running through the week and no actual retirement on the table, the bigger question is what he picks up once this season wraps.
