Avengers: Endgame has officially reclaimed its throne. The 2019 Marvel blockbuster, resurrected in a rerelease dubbed Endgame: Encore, has pushed past Avatar’s global total to become the highest-grossing film of all time — not once, but twice. With $2.9255 billion worldwide, it now sits at the top, edging out James Cameron’s 2009 epic by a mere $1.8 million. The numbers are clean, the momentum real. And the timing? Perfect.

The re-release, timed to build hype for Avengers: Doomsday, set for December 18. Delivered a $4.4 million domestic haul and $14.4 million overseas in its second weekend. That brought the cumulative total over the $2.92 billion mark. Last week alone, Encore pulled in $86 million globally, making it the second-highest-grossing rerelease ever, behind only Titanic 3D’s 2012 revival.

It wasn’t just a box office win. It was a cultural reset. After being dethroned in 2022 when Avatar returned with a sequel push, Endgame’s return to the summit feels less like nostalgia and more like a statement. The MCU’s final chapter is back in the spotlight, not as a relic, but as a benchmark.

And yet, the victory isn’t just about money. It’s about legacy. The Russo brothers are returning to direct Doomsday, the next big entry in the franchise. With Dune: Part Three also hitting theaters on the same day, the stakes couldn’t be higher. Will the new Avengers film live up to the ghost of its predecessor? Or will it be another one of those movies that gets remembered more for what came before than what it actually is?

For now, the numbers don’t lie. But the real test starts in two months.
