Four days in, the Tamil box office has a clear hierarchy, and it isn't the one some were expecting on release Friday.

Baththa, the Balaji Tharaneetharan film reuniting him with Vijay Sethupathi after Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom and Seethakaathi, recorded its biggest day yet on Sunday. The film grossed Rs 3.60 crore and collected Rs 3.10 crore net across 1,290 shows, with occupancy climbing to 48 percent, up from 24 percent on its opening Thursday. That took its four-day India net past Rs 10 crore, to Rs 10.05 crore, with a worldwide gross of Rs 11.68 crore, all of it domestic so far, according to Cinema Express.

The climb has been steady rather than explosive. Baththa opened with Rs 1.73 crore on Thursday, moved to Rs 3.15 crore on Friday, held at Rs 3.20 crore on Saturday, and then jumped on Sunday. Tamil Nadu has carried almost the entire run, contributing Rs 9.90 crore of the film's gross so far, with Karnataka, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh and Telangana adding comparatively little.

Sigma, meanwhile, is telling a very different story. Jason Sanjay's debut as writer-director, starring Sundeep Kishan as a debt-ridden youngster who stumbles into a drug racket and a heist plan, opened on October 2 and has now gone flat. Cinema Express put its Sunday gross at Rs 1.70 crore, unchanged from Saturday, with the three-day India gross at Rs 6.10 crore and net at Rs 5.35 crore across 1,753 shows at 23.6 percent occupancy. Koimoi's figures track closely on the net side, 5.35 crore after three days, but arrive at a slightly different gross of Rs 6.3 crore, and describe a sharper fall, from an opening-day net of Rs 2.35 crore to Rs 1.5 crore on day two before it plateaued.

Koimoi went further, calling Sigma's three-day total the lowest opening weekend for a Kollywood directorial debut in 2026, behind Ken Karunas' Youth, which opened to Rs 17.8 crore, as well as Thaai Kizhavi and With Love. Whether that framing holds up depends on how the numbers are tracked, but both outlets agree the film has not moved since Saturday, which is the harder problem for any opening weekend.

Tamil Nadu is Sigma's stronghold too, contributing Rs 3.15 crore of its gross, with Andhra Pradesh and Telangana adding Rs 2.18 crore and Karnataka and Kerala trailing well behind. The film has not recorded any overseas collection yet.

Both films released into a crowded week that also had Nivin Pauly's Yezhu Kadal Yezhu Malai, Dorothy, and the still-running Meesaya Murukku 2 and Mandaadi, both of which continue to outgross the newer arrivals on individual days. Sigma has still done better than Dorothy and Yezhu Kadal Yezhu Malai at the gate, just not enough to keep pace with Baththa.

Week two will decide whether Baththa's word of mouth holds through weekday drops, and whether Sigma can find any lift at all once the opening-weekend curiosity around a star's son behind the camera runs out.
