The 2019 project that fell apart when Salman Khan walked away just before shooting may get a second life with a reworked script, according to a Mid-Day report.
Inshallah isn't dead after all, apparently. Sanjay Leela Bhansali and Alia Bhatt are looking at reviving the shelved 2019 project once Love And War hits theatres, according to a report in Mid-Day picked up by Bollywood Hungama and later by the Times of India.
Here's the quick history for anyone who's forgotten. Inshallah was announced in 2019 with Salman Khan and Alia Bhatt as the leads, a first-time pairing of Bhansali with Salman. It collapsed shortly before the shoot was meant to start. Bollywood Hungama's report says Salman opted out, while the Times of India frames it as creative differences between Bhansali and the actor. The two outlets don't fully agree on why it fell apart, only that it did, and fast.
Bhansali moved on quickly. He made Gangubai Kathiawadi with Alia instead, which won her a National Award for Best Actress. Now the two are back together on Love And War, alongside Ranbir Kapoor and Vicky Kaushal, a film that's already made headlines for its reported Rs. 300 crore theatrical rights deal. That one arrives January 21, 2026, after character posters went up recently.
Inshallah, if it does come back, won't be the same film that was announced seven years ago. The Mid-Day report, as cited by Bollywood Hungama, says the basic love story stays but the material is being reworked for a different approach. Translation: don't expect a straight revival of the old script with a new hero slotted in.
Who plays opposite Alia this time?
That's the open question, and nobody's answering it yet. Shah Rukh Khan's name floated around earlier this year as a possible replacement for Salman. But a source quoted in the Mid-Day report pours cold water on any immediate decision, saying, "No casting gets locked on a Bhansali film without the script being finalised. Salman is occupied with Raj-DK's film while Shah Rukh hasn't decided his next after King. It's also possible that the story will seek a younger actor."
So take your pick. Salman's busy elsewhere. Shah Rukh hasn't committed to anything post-King. And there's a real chance Bhansali goes younger for the male lead instead of chasing either superstar. None of this is confirmed, and Bhansali is reportedly not touching casting until the script itself is locked down, which is classic Bhansali process, honestly, he's never been a filmmaker who casts first and writes later.
For now Inshallah sits in the same place it's been since 2019: a title with history, a leading lady who's stuck with the project through two other films, and a lead actor slot that's anyone's guess. Love And War needs to open and run its course first. After that, expect the Inshallah conversation to get louder, assuming Bhansali actually greenlights it this time.
