Poornima, who came up through Bigg Boss, has signed on for a key role in Mari Selvaraj's Manjanathi, joining Kayadu Lohar in the cast. That pairing alone has generated a fair bit of noise. Mari Selvaraj is currently juggling two productions. One stars Dhanush, with A.R. Rahman on music. The other is Manjanathi, with Ilaiyaraaja composing. Two of Indian cinema's biggest names, on two different Mari Selvaraj sets at the same time. It's the kind of coincidence that gets a Tamil film Twitter timeline going.

Kayadu Lohar's casting already had people asking questions

Even before Poornima's name came up, Kayadu Lohar playing the heroine in a Mari Selvaraj film had raised eyebrows. His cinema runs on rooted, specific, often rural texture, going back to his debut. How an actor known for a very different kind of screen presence fits into that world is a question people following the project have been asking. Poornima's addition in a key role adds another layer to that curiosity rather than settling it.

The Bison shadow looms large

It's hard to talk about Mari Selvaraj right now without talking about Bison. His last release, built around the life of kabaddi player Manathi Ganesan and starring Dhruv Vikram, turned into a mega blockbuster, pulling in more than fifty crore and landing well with critics too. For Dhruv, whose earlier films hadn't quite worked, Bison changed things. It gave him a real foothold in the industry, and reportedly gave his father Vikram plenty to be happy about as well.

Before that, Mari Selvaraj had already built a run few directors manage. His debut, Pariyerum Perumal, left the industry stunned, so much so that the late director Bharathiraja spoke on stage about how the film, and its climax shot in particular, floored him. Karnan, Maamannan and Vaazhai followed, each landing as a hit in its own right.

That's the track record Manjanathi is stepping into. A first-time composer pairing with Ilaiyaraaja, a parallel Dhanush project with Rahman, and now a cast that includes Kayadu Lohar and Poornima in key parts. No release window has been confirmed yet, and Mari Selvaraj hasn't spoken publicly about how either of his new leading women fits into the story he's telling this time. That's the piece still missing, and it's the one that will decide whether Manjanathi reads as a departure or just another Mari Selvaraj film with a fresh face in it.
