Bigg Boss Tamil has never let ordinary people compete for a spot in the house. Season 10 just changed that.

Host Vijay Sethupathi opened the season with a format nobody saw coming. Instead of the usual straight walk-in, three contestants were brought on stage at a time and put through live audience voting. Only the ones who pulled the most votes got sent inside. Everyone else went home before the house doors even opened.

The gimmick paid off in variety. Nineteen contestants eventually made it in, a mix of serial actors, film names, social media creators and, for the first time in the show's run, three contestants with no television or film background at all.

That trio, Muniyamma, Jason and Shama, came out of a pool of over a lakh applications, according to Filmibeat Tamil. Muniyamma in particular is being talked up for her village background and blunt, unfiltered way of speaking, the kind of thing Bigg Boss producers usually manufacture rather than find.

The rest of the line-up leans familiar. Lakshmi Priya, who played Kaveri in Mahanadi, walks in with a reputation for sharp talk and comic timing. Shanthini Tamilarasan, who debuted in the 2010 film Sithu +2, brings a different kind of screen experience. Black Pandi, known from Angadi Theru and for his social work outside the industry, returns to reality television after a long gap. Vinoth Babu, a face from Thendral Vandhu Ennai Thodum, has apparently been on the show's radar for several seasons before finally getting the call.

There's Kumaran from Pandiyan Stores, playing the quiet good-boy card early. Muthazhagi and Shadhika bring serial and social media followings of their own, with Shadhika's Get Ready With Me content already giving her a ready-made audience. Prithvinath, a Salem-born content creator now based in Germany, is positioned as the show's youth voice. Actress Tanya walks in on the back of buzz around the web series Resort. Ashmitha, a wedding make-up artist to celebrities, and Ansar, remembered from Cook With Comali, round out a cast that also includes Raghavan Raghunathan, Mukesh, Swamika and Javith, the last one billed as the season's suspense element.

One entry came with its own subplot. Avinash made it in after facing off against his own sister, Akshitha, in the audience vote, and won.

Whether the format sticks around for future eliminations or was just an opening-night hook remains to be seen. What's clear is the calculation behind it. Filmibeat Tamil's report frames the early chatter around whether the already-acquainted Lakshmi Priya and Shadhika turn into an alliance or rivals, how a low-key player like Kumaran adapts once the cameras never switch off, and whether Muniyamma and the other common-man contestants can actually hold their own against a house full of professionals.

That last question might end up mattering more than the celebrity wattage. Season 10 has three days, at most, before the group dynamics settle and the real game starts.
