Charlie Sheen, Martin Sheen Reunite For AMC's Happy Jack

The father-son duo will shoot a six-episode multi-cam season on the old Friends soundstage, aiming for a 2027 launch on AMC and AMC+.

Charlie Sheen is going back to a live studio audience, and he's bringing his dad along.

AMC and AMC+ have ordered six episodes of Happy Jack, a multi-cam family comedy starring Charlie Sheen and Martin Sheen as father and son, according to reports from Variety, TheWrap and JoBlo published Monday. Production starts in Los Angeles early next year, with the show aimed at a 2027 launch.

There's a specific bit of Hollywood trivia baked into the deal too. The series will shoot in front of a live audience at Warner Bros. Studios, on the same stage where Friends was filmed for a decade. JoBlo reported it's Stage 24 specifically, though Variety and TheWrap didn't get that granular.

Who's playing whom

Charlie plays Jack, described in the official logline as "a bit of a lifelong ne'er-do-well" with two daughters. Kate runs his company and, per the logline, keeps him on the rails. Sam is the wild one, more like her dad. Martin Sheen plays Jack's father, who the logline notes "deserves more credit for how they turned out" than Jack does.

The plot kicks off when Sam brings home a new boyfriend named Paul, a former investment banker turned van-life guru who happens to be Jack's exact age. Cue the reckoning. Jack has to decide, per the show's own framing, whether he keeps "looking out for number one" or finally shows up for his kids.

Jim Patterson and Matt Ross wrote the pilot and will run the show, both veterans of Two and a Half Men's post-Charlie years and Netflix's The Ranch. Charlie is an executive producer alongside them, with Todd Christopher, the Tannenbaum Company's Eric and Kim Tannenbaum and Jason Wang, and 20th Television also producing under the AMC Studios banner.

Dan McDermott, AMC Studios president and chief content officer at AMC Global Media, called it "something new for AMC" in a statement, name-checking his own history with Charlie on Spin City. AMC Global Media will pitch the series to international buyers at MIPCOM this October, so a lot of the marketing groundwork happens before a single scene is shot.

This isn't the first time the Sheens have played father and son on screen. Martin picked up an Emmy nomination for guest-starring as Charlie's dad on Two and a Half Men and reprised that dynamic on Anger Management. They shared the frame in Wall Street back in 1987, in No Code of Conduct, and in smaller doses in Cadence, Free Money and Hot Shots! Part Deux.

For Charlie, this is the real comeback. His three-episode run on HBO Max's Bookie earlier this year, opposite Chuck Lorre regulars, went uncredited. Happy Jack puts his name back on a call sheet as a lead.

"It's no secret that it's been a minute," Charlie said in a statement, adding that "the crew has reassembled" and it's "time to give the people what they want."

No casting has been announced yet for Kate, Sam or Paul. Given AMC wants this in front of buyers at MIPCOM within weeks, expect those names to surface fast.
