Ganpati Bappa has some unusual company in Chembur this year. The Sahyadri Krida Mandal pandal, celebrating its 50th edition, has gone full Marvel, with life-size figures of Iron Man, Captain America, Hulk, Black Widow and Deadpool built into its festive setup.
Videos of the décor started circulating online through the mandal's own social channels, and they've been doing the rounds since. It's not every day a Ganpati pandal doubles up as an Avengers set, and the novelty is exactly why clips of the display have travelled so fast across Mumbai's festival WhatsApp groups and Instagram feeds.
The timing isn't an accident, or at least it reads that way. Avengers Endgame: Encore lands back in Indian cinemas on September 25, giving the Infinity Saga's finale another theatrical run right in the middle of the festival window. The re-release also functions as a bridge to Avengers: Doomsday, which the Russo brothers have set for December 18, so Marvel's Indian marketing calendar and Mumbai's Ganpati calendar have ended up colliding in the best possible way.
Chembur wasn't alone in leaning into the theme. Tilak Nagar Festivals also put out its own pandal content around the same superhero motif, suggesting this is turning into a small trend rather than one mandal's one-off idea.
The celebrity sighting angle showed up too, because it always does during Ganpati season in the city. Content creator Ranveer Allahabadia was photographed at the Chembur pandal posing with a Black Panther figure, and that image has been doing its own separate rounds online, adding another layer of shareability to an already viral setup.
What's interesting is how organic this crossover feels. Nobody at Marvel Studios or Disney India appears to have engineered it. A neighbourhood mandal simply decided its golden jubilee needed something bigger than the usual mythological tableau, and the internet's appetite for anything Marvel-adjacent did the rest.
Ganpati visarjan for most ten-day pandals in Mumbai falls around September 27, which means Iron Man and company have only a few more days on display before the idols, and the décor, go under. Endgame: Encore arrives in theatres just before that, on the 25th, giving fans a genuine two-for-one week if they're the sort who'll do darshan and a re-release screening in the same 48 hours. Whether other pandals across the city pick up the theme before visarjan remains to be seen.
