Daayra didn't open big. But it's climbing.

The Kareena Kapoor and Prithviraj Sukumaran crime thriller collected 2.18 crore net on its first Saturday, up 88% from Friday's 1.16 crore, according to figures reported by Koimoi. Two days in, the film stands at 3.34 crore net, which works out to roughly 3.94 crore gross. On current trends, the opening weekend should land somewhere between 6.14 and 6.34 crore net.

That's not a number that sets the box office alight. But it's a recovery, and recoveries matter more than openings when a film has no big star vehicle behind it and no festival weekend pushing footfalls.

Part of the Saturday bump can likely be traced to the BOGO offer running alongside the release, a buy-one-get-one ticket deal that tends to inflate weekend numbers across multiplex chains regardless of the film. How much of the jump is genuine word of mouth versus a discounted ticket price is hard to separate out this early. Koimoi's report suggests both are doing some of the work.

What's harder to dismiss is the BookMyShow rating. Daayra sits at 8.7 out of 10 from more than 1,800 votes, a number that usually points to an audience walking out satisfied rather than one buying tickets out of habit.

Directed by Meghna Gulzar and produced by Vineet Jain and Dhaval Gada under Junglee Pictures and Pen Studios, the film also features Pragati Mishra, Prammod Sanghi, Sumali Khaniwale and Upendra Chauhan in supporting roles. It released into a crowded Friday, sharing screens with several other Hindi titles, which likely ate into its opening-day numbers before word of mouth had a chance to spread.

The bigger question is what happens over the next twelve days. Ajay Devgn's Drishyam 3 arrives on October 2, and that's the kind of release that tends to swallow screen share from smaller films overnight. Daayra has a runway before that competition lands, and if Saturday's trend holds through the weekdays, a decent extended run isn't out of reach.

What it won't get is a second chance once Drishyam 3 opens. Trade watchers will be tracking Sunday's number closely. A third straight day of growth would tell a very different story than a Saturday spike followed by a Monday slide, and right now Daayra needs the former.
