Four days in, and the arithmetic on Daayra isn't kind. The Meghna Gulzar film, starring Kareena Kapoor Khan and Prithviraj Sukumaran, dropped 74.3% on its first Monday, collecting an estimated Rs 45 lakh net from 1,562 shows, according to Sacnilk. That's a brutal fall from Sunday's Rs 1.75 crore.

Add it all up and the India net total sits at roughly Rs 4.95 crore, with the India gross at around Rs 5.93 crore. Overseas, the film picked up another Rs 25 lakh on Day 4, pushing its international gross to about Rs 1.75 crore. Worldwide, that puts Daayra at approximately Rs 7.68 crore after four days.

Here's the problem. Reports have pegged Daayra's budget at around Rs 55 crore, though the makers haven't confirmed the figure themselves. If that number holds up, the film has recovered a small fraction of its cost, and the Monday drop suggests it isn't about to pick up steam on its own. First-Monday collapses like this one usually mean a film is leaning entirely on weekend crowds, and those don't repeat forever.

The reviews don't match the numbers

What makes this one sting is that Daayra isn't being written off critically. The Free Press Journal's review gave it 3.5 stars out of 5, calling it "undoubtedly one of the best works of Meghna Gulzar" and adding that the film "deals with a sensitive topic maturely," staying within its own boundaries rather than going for melodrama. The reviewer went as far as to call it a film worth watching in a theatre, predicting it would "start a lot of discussions on social media."

That's the gap Daayra is stuck in right now. Strong word from critics, a lead cast that includes two actors with real box office pedigree, and a subject serious enough to generate conversation. None of it has translated into Monday footfalls. Films dealing with heavier themes often lean on word of mouth to build through the week rather than open big, and Daayra's opening weekend wasn't explosive to begin with, so the second-week test becomes about whether that critical goodwill actually converts audiences who skipped the first weekend.

The film released on September 18, and the coming days, particularly the second weekend, will decide whether Daayra can claw back any ground. A Rs 55 crore film needs a real bounce to justify itself commercially, discussions on Twitter and Instagram don't pay distributors, and right now the gap between what critics are saying about Daayra and what audiences are doing about it remains the story worth watching.
