Season 35 of Dancing With the Stars didn't even make it through three dances before things went sideways. Midway through Tuesday's premiere, hosts Julianne Hough and Alfonso Ribeiro told viewers the show's website had stopped taking votes. By the third performance, the news got worse. Any online votes that had actually gone through would be tossed. For the rest of the night, only text votes counted.

It's an awkward start for a franchise that leaned hard into audience turnout this season. Producers split the premiere across two nights, with the eight male celebrities dancing Tuesday and the eight women following Wednesday, and one elimination happening at the end of each. Despite the mess, ABC still logged more than double the votes from last year's opener, according to Variety.

Adding to the chaos, this cast has two Connors. Comedian and influencer Connor Wood and reality personality Conner Leavitt, husband of Secret Lives of Mormon Wives star Whitney Leavitt, forced the show to get creative with instructions, telling fans to text "Conner L" or "Connor W" depending on who they wanted to save.

Who danced, who scored, who's out

Grey's Anatomy actor Harry Shum Jr. And partner Jenna Johnson closed the night with the top score, a 21 out of 30 for their cha-cha to Earth, Wind & Fire's "Let's Groove." Paralympic gold medalist Ezra Frech wasn't far behind at 20, with judge Derek Hough handing out the night's first sevens. Bachelorette alum Tyler Cameron opened as the early frontrunner at 17 before slipping to third, not helped by Hough mistakenly calling him Dylan during critiques.

At the bottom of the leaderboard sat Jimmy Kimmel Live! Regular Guillermo Rodriguez and partner Witney Carson at 10, just ahead of Leavitt and Adele Zaikman, the first-ever winner of Dancing With the Stars: The Next Pro, who scored 12. Combined with the vote count, that was enough to send Leavitt and Zaikman home on night one.

The women take over Wednesday, with a cast that includes Fresh Prince veteran Tatyana Ali, chef Giada De Laurentiis, Rookie actor Jenna Dewan, figure skater Amber Glenn, Love Island's Maura Higgins, Summer House's Ciara Miller, reality star Sarah Jane Nader and 10 Things I Hate About You's Julia Stiles. Each celebrity, per the show's format this season, dances to a chart-topping song from the year they were born.

ABC hasn't said whether the online voting problem was a one-off or something the show will need to explain before next week's episode. For a season that opened with a cast this stacked and a scoring race already this tight, a repeat glitch is the last thing producers want walking into week two.
