Dancing With the Stars has never made anyone wait to vote someone off. Season 35 is different. The premiere, which began Tuesday night, is split across two full episodes and two separate eliminations, and nobody dances alongside the opposite gender until the format resets next week.

Tuesday's episode belonged to the men. Tyler Cameron opened with a tango to Lenny Kravitz, Harry Shum Jr. Went cha-cha to Earth, Wind & Fire, and Taylor Hanson quickstepped to Billy Joel. Each celebrity danced to a No. 1 song from the year they were born, a wrinkle producers built into the whole premiere. One of the men went home before the night was out.

Wednesday flips it. The women, Julia Stiles, Jenna Dewan, Tatyana Ali, Maura Higgins, Giada De Laurentiis and the rest of the female cast, take the floor for the first time, working the same birth-year format. Another elimination follows, meaning two dancers are gone before Season 35 has even settled into a normal week.

Both premiere episodes run roughly two hours, airing 8 p.m. ET on ABC and simulcast on Disney+, with next-day access on Hulu. Viewers without cable can catch it live through DirecTV, Fubo, Sling or Hulu + Live TV, most of which are dangling five-day free trials for anyone who wants to watch and bail.

Once the split premiere wraps, the show goes back to its familiar single-night rhythm. Episode three lands September 22, episode four on September 29, both back at the usual Tuesday 8 p.m. ET slot. ABC hasn't set a finale date yet.

There's a new wrinkle for viewers who can't get enough after the credits roll, too. Robert Irwin, who won the Mirrorball last season, is hosting a live after-show called DWTS After Party, premiering Wednesday at 10 p.m. ET right after the second premiere episode. Eliminated contestants show up to talk through the double elimination, and it streams on Hulu the next day like everything else.

Julianne Hough and Alfonso Ribeiro are back as co-hosts, and the judging panel hasn't changed either, Carrie Ann Inaba, Derek Hough and Bruno Tonioli are all at the table. Behind the scenes, Hailey Bills moved up from troupe to pro this season in what's only the third same-sex pairing in the show's run, partnering Sarah Jane Nader, while Adele Zaikman, fresh off winning DWTS: The Next Pro, gets paired with Conner Leavitt.

With the field now down two dancers before the season's even a week old, the pressure on whoever survives premiere week just went up. Season 35 settles into its regular Tuesday groove on September 22, and that's when the real scoring starts to matter.
