Dhanush has added his voice to the growing list of Tamil film industry names backing Modha Rathri, a small film that's been getting bigger word of mouth than box office numbers.

On Wednesday, the actor took to X after meeting the film's cast and crew, calling it "such a heartwarming film" and praising the effort put in by its first-time director, writer and lead actors. "Have to applaud this wonderful effort by a bunch of first-timers," he wrote, asking audiences to catch it in theatres with their families.

Director Tamizharasan Pachamuthu, who has an upcoming project with Dhanush, quote-tweeted the post to thank him, writing that "appreciation like this will inspire and encourage many more debut talents." Production house Mythri Movie Makers responded too, saying the endorsement had the Modha Rathri team "on cloud nine."

This isn't the first big name to champion the film. Silambarasan TR had already backed it before Dhanush's post, and Pachamuthu had voiced his support earlier as well. For a project stacked with newcomers, that kind of industry attention matters.

A first night that goes somewhere darker

Modha Rathri marks the directorial debut of Raja Karuppasamy, who also wrote the film. It centres on a newly married couple whose wedding wasn't entirely their own choice, and it unfolds largely across their first night together. Rather than playing that setup as romance, the film uses it to dig into uncomfortable truths, both about the couple and the families who arranged the match.

What starts out looking like a familiar story about a forced marriage turns into something about family expectations and the things that stay hidden under social convention. Rishikanth and Anishma Anilkumar lead the cast, with Chetan, Bagavathi Perumal, Abdool Lee and A Venkatesh in support.

The film is produced by Naveen Yerneni and Y Ravi Shankar under Mythri Movie Makers, marking the Telugu banner's third Tamil production after Ajith Kumar's Good Bad Ugly and the Pradeep Ranganathan-Mamitha Baiju starrer Dude.

The numbers haven't caught up yet

Here's the gap Modha Rathri is trying to close. According to Sacnilk, the film had collected Rs 7.41 crore in India across its first ten days, a number that lags well behind the critical and industry reception it's picked up. Praise from names like Dhanush and Silambarasan doesn't automatically move footfalls, but it does keep a small film in conversation past its opening weekend, which is often the hardest thing for a debut project to manage.

Whether that translates into a longer theatrical run depends on the next fortnight. More than two weeks in, Modha Rathri is still leaning entirely on word of mouth, and now it has some heavyweight voices doing the talking for it.
