Ella Beatty just got handed an axe and a legend. The 26-year-old, daughter of Warren Beatty and Annette Bening, stars as the title character in Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story, the fourth season of Ryan Murphy's true-crime anthology, which landed on Netflix Wednesday with all eight episodes at once.

The premiere itself happened Wednesday night in New York, where Beatty walked the carpet alongside co-stars Vicky Krieps and Charlie Hunnam. Billie Lourd, Jessica Barden and Joey Pollari showed up too, along with showrunner Ian Brennan, director Max Winkler and Murphy himself. Hunnam plays Lizzie's father, and Rebecca Hall plays her stepmother, the two people Borden was accused of killing with an axe in Fall River, Massachusetts, back in 1892. She was tried and acquitted, and the case has stayed unsolved and endlessly retold for over a century.

Netflix's own logline leans hard into the gothic melodrama of it all: a repressed daughter of a wealthy New England family and her maid trapped in a house built on cruelty, who escape into fantasy before the murders turn Borden into an icon who refuses to be caged. Make of that what you will before you press play.

Beatty is the latest name in what's become a running bit with Murphy's casting. Emma Roberts and Billie Lourd have anchored American Horror Story for years. Kaia Gerber and Homer Gere led The Shards. Add Beatty to that list and the pattern writes itself, though nobody's pretending the surname didn't help open the door.

What she does with the part is a separate question, and one worth taking seriously given the pedigree. Warren Beatty and Annette Bening met on 1991's Bugsy and married the following year, and their four kids, Stephen, Ben, Isabel and Ella, grew up around two actors who took very different routes to the top. Ella told E! News that their main advice going into the Borden role was to listen rather than perform, to get interested instead of trying to be interesting, and to never be the smartest person in the room. Simple stuff, but it's the kind of note a parent gives when they've spent decades on set watching people ignore it.

This isn't Beatty's first Murphy production either. She debuted on his Feud: Capote Vs. The Swans, made her film debut last year in If I Had Legs I'd Kick You opposite Oscar nominee Rose Byrne, and stepped into Appropriate on Broadway replacing Elle Fanning. Bening has called her daughter disciplined and hardworking, and Ella has said working with her mother is still a dream, not yet a plan.

Monster has previously dramatized Jeffrey Dahmer, played by Evan Peters, the Menendez brothers, played by Cooper Koch and Nicholas Alexander Chavez, and Ed Gein, played by Hunnam in season three. Whether Borden's season matches those in the ratings conversation is now a streaming-numbers question, not a red-carpet one.
