If you're planning to stay up (or wake up absurdly early) for the Emmys this year, mark your clock for 5:30 am on September 15. That's when the 78th Primetime Emmy Awards go live on JioHotstar for Indian viewers, streamed straight from the Peacock Theater in Downtown Los Angeles.

The red carpet gets going an hour earlier, at 4:30 am IST, so anyone chasing outfit reactions before the trophies start moving will need to be online even sooner. JioHotstar has been pushing the broadcast hard on social media, with a promo line calling it "television's biggest night."

Mariska Hargitay, still best known to most Indian audiences as SVU's Olivia Benson, hosts this year's ceremony. It's a full-circle kind of gig for an actor who's spent close to three decades on network television being handed the mic for the industry's own night out.

Who's actually leading

Strip out the Creative Arts Emmys, which were already handed out on September 5 and 6, and the race for the main ceremony looks fairly clear on paper. HBO's medical drama The Pitt walks in with 12 nominations, comfortably ahead of the pack. HBO's Hacks and Apple TV's Widow's Bay are tied for second with 7 each, while Apple's Pluribus and ABC's Abbott Elementary sit on 6 nominations apiece.

None of that guarantees a trophy haul, obviously. Nomination counts and win counts have a habit of parting ways once the envelopes actually open, and with 19 competitive categories across drama, comedy and limited series up for grabs on the night, there's plenty of room for the tallies to scramble.

The eligibility window for this cycle ran from June 1, 2025 to May 31, 2026, with nominations announced back on July 8. So by the time Los Angeles gets to Sunday evening local time, which lands as early Monday morning in India, the shortlist has already been sitting out there for over two months, giving betting markets and TV Twitter plenty of time to argue about snubs.

The presenter list reads like a genuine flex. Zendaya, Sofía Vergara, Jamie Lee Curtis, Amy Poehler, Florence Pugh, Jon Hamm, Woody Harrelson, John Mulaney, Matthew McConaughey, Shailene Woodley, Emma D'Arcy and Hassie Harrison are all confirmed to hand out awards, alongside Paul Anthony Kelly and Thaddeus LaGrone.

For Indian viewers used to catching Emmy highlights the next morning in clip form, this is one of the rare years the ceremony is available live and in full without needing a VPN or a workaround. Whether that 5:30 am slot survives contact with actual Monday-morning alarms is a separate question. The Pitt's 12 nominations will be the number to watch once the winners start getting announced.
