With the submission window shut, Cannes and Venice winners are jostling for the one non-English slot that actually gets to march down the aisle.
The submission deadline for Oscar's best international feature category has closed, and the festival circuit has already handed the industry its first real shortlist to argue about.
Top of that list, according to Variety's awards desk, is Romania's "Fjord," which arrives carrying the Palme d'Or from Cannes this year. That's about as strong an opening hand as a country can submit. France isn't far behind with "Minotaur," the film that finished runner-up to "Fjord" at the same festival, a reminder that Cannes often ends up supplying half the eventual nominee list anyway.
Spain has gone with "La Bola Negra," fresh off winning the People's Choice Award at TIFF, a prize that has a decent track record of translating into Oscar attention because it's voted on by actual audiences rather than juries. South Korea's entry, "Possible Love," brings its own pedigree. Lee Chang-dong took the directing prize at Venice for it, and a director with that kind of festival history tends to get a long look from the Academy's international voting branch.
Then there's Denmark. "Woman Unknown" won the Golden Lion in Venice, the festival's top prize, which on paper makes it the most decorated film in this early conversation. But Variety flags the obvious complication: the film still doesn't have U.S. Distribution locked down. No distributor usually means no campaign infrastructure, no screenings for voters, no awards consultant working the phones. Golden Lion or not, that's the kind of gap that's sunk serious contenders before.
What happens next is mostly procedural but it matters. Countries are still finalising their official selections, so the full submission list isn't out yet. Behind the five films already making noise, there will be dozens of national entries nobody outside the festival trade press has clocked.
The calendar from here is dense. The Governors Awards land Sunday, November 15, with Glenn Close and Ridley Scott picking up honorary Oscars, though that ceremony has nothing to do with this category directly. The real mechanics start in December: shortlist voting across twelve categories runs December 7 to 11, with the shortlists themselves announced on December 15. The eligibility window closes December 31, nominations voting runs January 11 to 15, 2027, and the actual nominations get read out on January 21.
The 99th Academy Awards air March 14, 2027, live on ABC from the Dolby Theatre, with Conan O'Brien hosting. That's more than five months away. Plenty of time for "Woman Unknown" to find a distributor, for a dark horse to surface out of a country nobody's tracking yet, and for Variety's own predictions to flip more than once before December rolls around.
