Gadi — the Marathi psychological thriller backed by Anurag Kashyap, will premiere at the Dharamshala International Film Festival (DIFF) this month, marking its first public screening. The film, written and directed by Rohan Pingal, who also shot it in black-and-white across Sangli and coastal Maharashtra, centers on a grieving father in a Konkan hamlet grappling with the unsettling truth of his own lack of free will. It’s not a story that explains itself. As Pingal put it: “It asks more than it explains.” That ambiguity is intentional. The film lives in silences, in what’s left unsaid. And for once, that’s exactly how the filmmakers wanted it. Anurag Kashyap, co-producing with Ranjan Singh and Rajendra Pingal through Amaze Production Film and Flip Films, didn’t ask for simplification. He let the vision stand raw. “I was surprised,” Kashyap said, recalling their first meeting at a post-lab where Pingal showed visuals he’d crafted entirely outside Mumbai’s VFX hubs. “That kind of independence? That’s rare.” The cast includes theater actor Raj Sane in the lead, alongside Kishore Kadam, Shirish Kulkarni, Shabnam Nad, and Hadelin De Ponteves. Music is by Ankush Boradkar. DIFF runs October 29–November 1 on site, with an online window from November 2–9. No word yet on a wider release. But if the festival buzz holds, Gadi might just be one of those films that lingers long after the credits roll. Not because it answers questions, but because it makes you stop asking them. The next move? Wait for the screening. Then decide whether to believe what you saw.
