Andrew Garfield walked the red carpet in a J. Press suit and Jaeger-LeCoultre watch, but it was his role as Sam Altman that had everyone talking at the New York Film Festival premiere of Artificial. The film, which dramatises the November 2023 OpenAI boardroom coup that saw Altman ousted — and then reinstated, debuted at Alice Tully Hall on Monday, October 5. Co-stars Yura Borisov, Ike Barinholtz, Jason Schwartzman, Billie Lourd, Cooper Hoffman, Matt Kranz, Will Angus, Nicholas Hamilton, and Will Price were all in attendance, turning the event into a full-on Hollywood gathering. Luca Guadagnino directed, with Amazon MGM Studios initially backing the project before pulling it in June. Neon stepped in to take over distribution. The film lands in select theatres on December 25, 2026, with a wider rollout in January. A teaser trailer is already circulating. Sam Altman himself has weighed in: he says one thing about Garfield’s portrayal is spot-on. No details yet on what that is. But the fact that the real-life AI chief has acknowledged the performance? That’s not something you see every day. Now, the question isn’t whether the movie will be controversial. It already is. It’s whether audiences will show up when it finally hits screens. And if they do, will they care more about the plot or the fashion? (Spoiler: probably both.)
