Gina Rodriguez is stepping behind the camera for the first time on a theatrical feature, and she's brought an old co-star along to help bankroll it. Deadline reported Monday that Rodriguez will direct House of Guerrero, a boxing drama she co-wrote with Bernardo Cubría, with Justin Baldoni producing through his Wayfarer Studios.

The film follows a young fighter whose career gets cut short right before a shot at getting back in the ring, "fighting for the life he thought he'd lost forever," per the official logline. Rodriguez is producing alongside Molly Breeskin under her own banner, I Can And I Will Productions, with Scott Budnick and Ameet Shukla of 1Community also attached.

This isn't quite a new idea. Deadline noted the project first surfaced back in 2021 as simply Guerrero, with Rodriguez set to direct, produce and co-star opposite professional boxer Ryan Garcia. That version never made it to a set. Five years on, it's back with a different cast plan and Baldoni's company now in the mix.

Wayfarer, 1Community, HarbourView Media Group and Clare LoCicero are co-financing the film, with tax credit money coming through Three Point Capital. UTA Independent Film Group has the job of selling it worldwide, which usually points to a festival premiere before any straight theatrical run.

On the fight side, the team has brought in serious names. Clayton J. Barber, who choreographed Black Panther and Creed III, and Eric Brown, who worked on John Wick: Chapter 3 and The Matrix Resurrections, are handling the boxing sequences.

For Rodriguez and Baldoni, this is the first project they've worked on together since Jane the Virgin wrapped, where she played Jane Villanueva opposite his Rafael Solano across five seasons on The CW. "Having spent five years working with Gina every day, I've had a front-row seat to her genius," Baldoni said in a statement, adding that "boxing is in her blood."

Rodriguez, in her own statement, called the film "the beginning of a new chapter in a story I've been carrying with me my entire life," and said she's been boxing "since I could walk."

The reunion comes a couple of months after Rodriguez and fellow Jane the Virgin actor Brett Dier publicly backed Baldoni, who is currently caught up in an ongoing legal dispute tied to It Ends With Us. That case is still working its way through the courts, and neither Deadline nor Just Jared indicated it has any bearing on House of Guerrero's path forward.

No cinematographer, cast or release window has been announced yet. With UTA already lined up to sell the film internationally, the next thing to watch for is whether Wayfarer takes House of Guerrero to a festival before any theatrical date gets locked in.
