The Hindi devotional drama has crossed 50 days in theatres with trade watchers expecting it to breach the Rs 400 crore mark by Sunday, even as social media posters and official trackers disagree on the exact tally.
Nobody budgeted for this. Hanuman Ansh, a small Hindi devotional film that opened on July 31 with barely any promotion, has spent seven weeks quietly rewriting what a low-budget release can do at the Indian box office.
According to figures reported by Telugu Filmibeat, the film's all-in budget, covering cast fees, crew, production and publicity, came to around Rs 3 crore. Fifty days later, it's sitting on an India net collection of Rs 291.53 crore and a gross of Rs 344.35 crore. Add in overseas numbers, which trade sources put at roughly Rs 37 crore across North America, Singapore, Malaysia, the UK and parts of Europe, and the worldwide total stands at Rs 381.35 crore, per Sacnilk's tracking.
The week-on-week graph is the strange part. Hanuman Ansh opened to just Rs 1.08 crore in its first week and dipped further to Rs 40 lakh in week two, the kind of numbers that usually mean a film quietly disappears. Instead it did the opposite. Week three brought in Rs 10.40 crore, and then the film exploded: Rs 61 crore in week four, Rs 90.25 crore in week five, Rs 80.25 crore in week six, and Rs 44.80 crore in week seven. On day 50 alone it added another Rs 3.35 crore, running across 3,767 shows nationwide at 21 percent occupancy.
That's not a typical trajectory for anything, let alone a film nobody was tracking in June.
The gap between trackers and timelines
Here's where it gets murky. Sacnilk's 50-day worldwide figure sits at Rs 381.35 crore, but posters circulating on social media claim the film has already crossed Rs 388 crore. Neither figure has been reconciled publicly, and CutMirchi couldn't independently verify which tally is current. What both agree on is direction: up, and fast, going into the weekend.
Early trade tracking for day 51 showed 1,076 shows running by 11am with Rs 51 lakh net already banked. Trade sources cited by Telugu Filmibeat expect the film to cross the Rs 400 crore mark by Sunday. If that holds, a film that cost less than most wedding budgets in Bollywood will have made back its investment well over a hundred times over.
The cast, led by Shobhinav Satya, Vihaan Shedge, Chandan K Anand, Purnima Tiwari and Anil Rastogi, isn't exactly a marquee lineup. Vishal Chaturvedi directed and also produced, alongside Ragini S, Namrata G Singh and Anupriya A Nagar. None of these are names that move opening weekends on their own. And yet.
The wider context matters here. This has been a rough year for big swings in Hindi cinema, with several high-budget titles struggling to clear their costs even on strong opening numbers. A three-crore devotional film outrunning them on pure word of mouth is the kind of story trade analysts don't see coming, and it's part of why online chatter around the film's run has only grown louder as the weeks pass.
What happens next is simple enough to track. If Sunday's numbers confirm the crossover past Rs 400 crore, Hanuman Ansh joins a very short list of Indian films that have turned a shoestring budget into a genuine box office event, and the trade will spend the next few weeks trying to explain how.
