Jessica Rothe has confirmed that Happy Death Day 3 is no longer just a fan dream — it’s actively being rebuilt, with a major shift in timeline. Speaking to THR ahead of the release of her new film Beware Boiúna, Rothe revealed she met with director Christopher Landon earlier this year to rework the final chapter of Tree Gelbman’s story. The original script had been in development since before the second film launched in 2019, but after seven years of silence, the project is finally gaining momentum, and with a twist. Instead of continuing from where Happy Death Day 2U left off, the third film will now leap forward into Tree’s adult life after college. 'It’s so exciting to really jump forward and see what’s going on with Tree and her life and if her life has gone how she thought it was going to go,' Rothe said, describing the new direction as both natural and emotionally resonant. She emphasized that the core premise remains intact. The time-loop concept still drives the narrative, but the focus has sharpened on who Tree is now, not who she was during her freshman year. 'A lot of those very, very early seeds that Chris had for the story are still in the new version,' she added, noting they’ve been reworked rather than discarded. The creative process was collaborative: Rothe said she was honored to be part of the story-breaking session with Landon, calling him 'a genius and one of my favorite humans in the world.' While the film isn’t locked in yet, she stressed there’s no urgency. 'There is no [mandatory] timeline in terms of when it makes sense for us to make this movie,' she said, underscoring the flexibility that comes from letting the story breathe. The only remaining hurdle? Studio approval. Rothe confirmed last month that the team is waiting on sign-off. But the momentum is real. In the meantime, she’s promoting Beware Boiúna, a horror thriller starring her alongside Kiana Madeira and Logan Marshall-Green. JoBlo called it 'the greatest killer snake movie of all time,' praising its balance of character depth, action, and dread. The FX, the performances, and the relentless pacing have drawn strong reactions. So while fans wait for Tree’s next loop, they’ve got something tangible: a sequel that’s not just coming back, it’s evolving.
