Erich Cannon's grief-soaked creature feature, which quietly played the festival circuit last year, finally lands on home viewing this horror season via 4Digital Media.
There's a monster in these woods, and it's finally coming to a screen near you, just not a cinema one.
4Digital Media has put out the official trailer for His Monster, an indie horror thriller that's skipping theatres entirely and heading straight to VOD on October 5. No big rollout, no festival tour redux. Just a quiet drop into an already crowded October horror slate.
The setup is grim in the way good indie horror usually is. James Streeter, played by Gabriel Casdorph, loses his daughter when she's swept out to sea under circumstances nobody can explain. He convinces himself it wasn't an accident. He thinks something took her, a creature pulled from Japanese folklore, and that belief eats away at whatever's left of his life. His marriage goes. His stability goes. He ends up wandering the woods near his home with a bottle for company, looking for proof that what he saw was real. And then people around him start dying, which either confirms his theory or confirms he's lost it entirely. The trailer doesn't tip its hand either way.
That ambiguity is the whole pitch. This isn't a jump-scare machine. It's built on atmosphere, on a man's unraveling, with what the film's own materials describe as a practical, physically built monster doing the heavy lifting rather than CGI. For horror fans tired of digital creatures that look weightless, that's a point in its favour, at least on paper.
Erich Cannon directs, working off a script he co-wrote with Nathan D. Lee. Cannon is a Scottish filmmaker who previously directed Braving Rapids and produced The Cuckoo Clock, another indie horror title. He's also credited as producer here, which tells you roughly the scale we're talking about. This is not a studio swing. It's a filmmaker-driven project that's been sitting in the pipeline since it first showed at the Olde Town Film Festival last year.
Meranda Long co-stars alongside Casdorph, though the trailer keeps its focus tight on Streeter's spiral rather than the ensemble around him.
There's no Indian distribution news attached to this yet, and given its direct-to-VOD path in the US, don't expect a theatrical run here either. Films like this typically surface later on streaming aggregators or genre-specific platforms once the initial VOD window closes.
For now, the only date that matters is October 5, when His Monster becomes available to rent or buy in the US. Whether the folklore monster turns out to be real, or just grief wearing a costume, is the question the film is clearly banking on audiences sticking around to answer.
