James Gunn confirms DCU Batman casting isn’t far off — but no one’s in the running yet
James Gunn says the DCU’s Batman casting isn’t far off — but no one’s in the running yet. Not even a name. The filmmaker, co-chief of DC Studios, dropped the latest on the Caped Crusader during a Thursday podcast episode tied to The Suicide Squad’s place in the new continuity.
‘It’s all b, ,’ he said flatly when asked if Batman had already been cast. ‘But when we do cast the DCU Batman, which isn’t very far away… I want to get everybody into account.’ No actor has been approached. No list exists. Just the promise: it’s coming soon.
And it won’t be a movie star by default. That’s the twist. Gunn wants the best actor for the role, not just someone with box office pull. He pointed to Superman’s casting as precedent: David Corenswet, 33, is the face of the Man of Tomorrow.
Batman will be around that age too. That’s not a hint. It’s a rule. One that could open doors for younger or less established talent.
But here’s what’s real: the current Dark Knight, Robert Pattinson, lives outside this universe. His films are separate. This is a reboot. A clean slate.
And while fans are already tossing names around, some serious, some wild, Gunn shut it down Friday on Threads: ‘No one is in the running.’ So why the tease? Because the world needs to know: this isn’t a rumor. It’s a process. And it’s starting.
As for Harley Quinn? Margot Robbie’s version might not survive intact. Gunn admitted she’s ‘one of the more difficult things’ to justify in the DCU. Joker hasn’t been introduced.
Their history? Uncertain. But he didn’t close the door. ‘If Margot wants to play her, I’ll bend over backwards to explain it,’ he said.
If not, another actress gets the chance. No pressure. Just a character waiting to be reimagined. The next chapter begins with a blank slate.
And a cape.
