Jessica Chastain is the mother. And also not. In Rob Savage’s Other Mommy, she plays a woman whose love for her daughter becomes something else entirely — something that should never be seen in full. The film, set to hit theatres on October 9, hinges on that tension: the sweetest face hiding the most furious thing. Director Savage says the entity, Chastain’s second self. Must remain just out of reach. ‘Whenever she appears, you learn something new,’ he told Cinema Express. ‘How she manipulates Bela. How she tricks the audience.’ The goal? Never let viewers feel they’ve seen it all. Not even close.

James Wan, producing under his Atomic Monster banner, called the shapeshifting nature of the creature ‘unlimited freedom’, a chance to break visual rules. Savage leaned into that. He wanted the horror to live in what’s implied, not shown. ‘The sweetness is almost too sweet,’ he said. ‘But underneath… coiled. Furious.’ As the entity grows more monstrous, the control slips. The mask cracks. That’s when the real terror begins.

It’s a familiar trick in modern horror. Let the audience imagine worse than anything on screen. But Savage wants Other Mommy to stand with the legends: Freddy Krueger, Michael Myers. A name that lingers after the credits. A presence that haunts the memory.

The cast includes Jay Duplass, Dichen Lachman, Karen Allen, Arian Moayed, Sean Kaufman, Adam Silver, and Alec Secareanu. Based on Josh Malerman’s novel, the film marks Savage’s latest after Host and The Boogeyman. It’s not a remake. It’s a reimagining, of fear, of motherhood, of what love can become when it turns inward.

October 9 isn’t just a release date. It’s the moment the world gets to decide if this new monster sticks. Or fades. One thing’s certain: it won’t be seen in full. Not ever.
