The former Home Improvement star was booked on obstruction and public intoxication charges after allegedly kicking a deputy who told him to stay in the car.
Jonathan Taylor Thomas spent Monday night behind bars at the Malibu/Lost Hills Sheriff's Station, booked on suspicion of obstructing an officer and public intoxication, jail records confirm. He walked out Tuesday.
The Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department says the trouble started before dawn in Westlake Village, when deputies pulled over a car stopped in the middle of an intersection, blocking traffic. Thomas, 45, was the passenger. Deputies told him to stay inside the vehicle. He didn't.
According to LASD, that's when a deputy tried to detain him and Thomas allegedly kicked the officer in the stomach. TMZ, which first reported the arrest, says Thomas had already come across as uncooperative during the stop and appeared intoxicated in public, at one point stepping out of the car against instructions.
No formal charges have been filed as of this writing, and a representative for Thomas told TMZ they had no comment. Page Six reached out separately and hadn't heard back.
It's a rare headline for an actor who has spent most of the last two decades avoiding them entirely. Thomas, who played middle son Randy Taylor on the sitcom through the '90s, went quiet after stepping back from acting, resurfacing only in flashes — walking his dogs around Los Angeles in 2021 after nearly eight years out of public view, then again in 2023 near a convenience store close to home. Earlier this year, his former on-screen mother Patricia Richardson posted a photo reuniting him with co-star Taran Noah Smith, captioning it "My other boys."
The arrest also lands his name next to two co-stars with far longer rap sheets. Tim Allen, who played the elder Taylor patriarch, pleaded guilty to felony drug trafficking back in 1978, served over two years in federal prison and was paroled in 1981. He was arrested again on a DUI charge in 1997 and has spoken publicly since about staying sober for decades.
Zachery Ty Bryan, who played eldest brother Brad, has had a rougher stretch more recently. Convictions for assault and domestic violence charges in Oregon, two separate DUI arrests in 2024, another domestic violence arrest in 2025, and a probation violation this year have kept him cycling through custody. He was sentenced to 19 months in prison in March while already serving time on the DUI case.
Whether Thomas faces formal charges over the alleged kick is still an open question. LASD hasn't detailed next steps, and his team hasn't said anything beyond declining comment. For an actor who's built a decade of near-total silence around his private life, that silence just got a lot louder.
