The Emmy and Tony winner becomes the third big name added to the Apple TV comedy's fourth season, which is set to jump forward in time.
Judith Light is heading to Shrinking. Variety reported Thursday, in an exclusive, that the 77-year-old actress has signed on for a recurring role in the Apple TV comedy's fourth season. Character details are being kept under wraps, and the show hasn't said when the season starts filming or streaming.
Light isn't walking in alone. Christian Slater and Karen Gillan were already confirmed for Season 4, which makes her the third new name added to a cast that's about to look pretty different from what fans remember from the first two seasons.
The returning lineup stays put: Jason Segel, Harrison Ford, Christa Miller, Jessica Williams, Luke Tennie, Michael Urie, Lukita Maxwell and Ted McGinley are all back. What's changing is the story around them. Creator Bill Lawrence has said the new season carries a time jump, though he's been clear the show isn't rebooting itself.
"I think people will feel when they come back to this show, that it's a completely different story," Lawrence said at a PaleyFest panel, per comments carried by Just Jared. "And the reason we agreed to do it was that we feel that the cast and characters of this show have enough stuff going on in their life that we are interested in seeing what a new story for these characters looks like."
So same people, new chapter. That's the pitch, anyway.
For Light, this is her second Apple TV gig this year. She's also set to appear in Presumed Innocent Season 2 at the streamer, which means her 2026 is shaping up as an Apple-heavy stretch.
Her resume barely needs the introduction at this point. Five Emmy nominations, one win, for outstanding guest actress in a comedy in 2023 for Poker Face. She's been nominated twice for Transparent and picked up nods for Ugly Betty and The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story too. On stage, she took home consecutive Tony Awards in 2012 and 2013, for Other Desert Cities and The Assembled Parties. Her TV credits stretch from Law & Order: SVU to Julia to The Politician.
Shrinking follows a grieving therapist, played by Segel, who ditches his training and starts telling clients exactly what he thinks, blowing up his own life along with theirs in the process. The show was created by Lawrence, Segel and Brett Goldstein, and Warner Bros. Television produces.
Apple TV has been busy trimming and renewing its slate through 2026, so a firm premiere date for Season 4 is still pending. Until the streamer locks one in, all anyone knows is that Light, Slater and Gillan are on the call sheet, and the story they're walking into is meant to feel unfamiliar.
