The actor tells the Happy Sad Confused podcast he's more at ease with the character now, even as he preps to play Gilderoy Lockhart in HBO's Harry Potter reboot.
Jon Snow might not be done yet. Kit Harington told the Happy Sad Confused podcast, as reported by Collider, that he still believes a version of his long-rumoured Game of Thrones sequel could work, even though the project spent roughly two years in development before it was quietly abandoned.
Asked why it fell apart, Harington was candid. "I still think there's a world in which something could work. I wouldn't have gone into it in the first place if I didn't," he said. "But I was very insistent at the start, as was HBO and George R.R. Martin, of like, if we don't find the right thing, let's not do it. It's much better if we don't." He added that the call to stop, in the end, was largely his own. "This isn't quite the right [story]."
That's not the same as closing the door. Harington said the years since have changed his relationship with the role entirely. "Now I've gone and done all these other things and now I feel more comfortable with that character and that world again and where it sits in my life," he said. Read that how you like. It's not a confirmation of anything in the works. It's an actor saying the version that didn't land two years ago isn't necessarily the last word.
A Different Kind Of HBO Return
Here's the thing, though. Harington doesn't need Jon Snow to get back on HBO's air. He's already signed on for another one of the network's tentpole fantasy properties, cast as Gilderoy Lockhart for Season 2 of the Harry Potter series. Lockhart, for anyone who skipped Chamber of Secrets, is the preening, self-adoring Defense Against the Dark Arts professor whose confidence badly outpaces his competence.
Harington seems to relish the contrast with Jon Snow. "Lockhart is addicted to himself," he said. "It's just a tiny step to my left." He's not new to the character either. He previously voiced Lockhart for the full-cast audiobook editions of the novels, which turned into an odd bit of personal ritual. After he got sober, he told the podcast, sleep got harder and his mind wouldn't switch off at night. The audiobooks became the fix. "I started listening to Harry Potter audiobooks, and now they're the thing I listen to every night."
So where does that leave the Jon Snow question? Nowhere official, really. No script, no greenlight, nothing from HBO or Martin beyond what Harington said on a podcast. But the door he once seemed to shut himself is at least ajar again, and that's more than fans had a year ago. Game of Thrones remains on HBO Max. Harington shows up as Lockhart when Harry Potter Season 2 arrives.
