A photo did the rounds on social media this weekend showing what looks like a dinosaur, another enormous creature, and a cluster of temple structures, all supposedly captured on the sets of Varanasi. Nobody has confirmed it's genuine. Nobody has confirmed it's from the film either.

That hasn't stopped it from becoming the only thing Telugu cinema Twitter wants to talk about.

Varanasi is SS Rajamouli's next big swing, with Mahesh Babu, Priyanka Chopra and Prithviraj Sukumaran leading a cast that already reads like an event film. Production has been underway for a while, but details have stayed locked down, which is exactly the sort of vacuum that lets one blurry image turn into a full-blown theory.

The picture spread fast enough that it didn't need a caption to do the work. One user called the outdoor set glimpse a sign of scale that no normal Indian film would attempt, throwing in a dinosaur emoji for emphasis. Another told followers to zoom in, insisting what they were seeing was unbelievable. A third admitted they hadn't waited this hard for a film since Ramayana's first musical teaser, and even then, the enthusiasm faded once that trailer actually dropped.

What we actually know

Here's the honest state of things. There is no studio confirmation that the image is real. There is no confirmation it's AI-generated either. It could be a genuine leak from a physically built set, or it could be a render somebody cooked up in an hour, timed perfectly to a project that thrives on mystery. Rajamouli's team hasn't addressed it.

What little is known about the story comes from scattered reports suggesting Varanasi is an action-adventure built around a time-travel mission to stop an asteroid from wiping out the planet. That's unconfirmed too. Rajamouli's films tend to hold plot details close until a first look or teaser lands, and this project has been no different.

What is locked in is the release date. Varanasi is set for April 7, 2027, timed to the Gudi Padwa and Ugadi weekend, which gives the makers roughly seven months from now to decide how much of this world they want to show before the film actually opens.

Given Rajamouli's track record with Baahubali and RRR, a leaked frame showing prehistoric creatures beside temple architecture is enough to set expectations spinning wildly, whether or not the picture holds up. The bigger question isn't whether fans are excited. It's whether the studio lets an unverified leak set the narrative, or steps in with an official glimpse before speculation runs further ahead of the film itself.
