The quiet tension of class and desire takes center stage as Lee Chang-dong’s new film, Possible Love, lands in select theaters this Friday. The movie, which premiered to acclaim at Venice, marks the director’s return to narrative cinema after his 2016 masterpiece Burning.
It centers on Mi-ok (Jeon Do-yeon), a woman living quietly with her laid-off husband Ho-seok (Sul Kyung-gu) and their son, until a funeral brings them into contact with Ye-ji (Cho Yeo-jeong), a documentary filmmaker, and her affluent husband Sang-woo (Zo In-sung). As Mi-ok agrees to be filmed, an uneasy fascination grows — not just with Ye-ji’s world, but with the enigmatic Sang-woo.
IndieWire’s David Ehrlich called it a ‘masterpiece,’ noting that while less explosive than Burning, it builds its emotional weight slowly, with every glance, gesture, and silence carrying the weight of unspoken longing. The film draws loose inspiration from Krzysztof Kieślowski’s Dekalog, but Lee reimagines the material with his own distinct poetic precision.
