The singer appeared by video at Luke Bryan's Nashville concert to reveal he's back for Season 25 alongside Carrie Underwood and host Ryan Seacrest.
Lionel Richie is coming back to American Idol. He confirmed it himself, over video, just days after doctors treated him for an irregular heartbeat.
The reveal happened Thursday night at Luke Bryan's Nashville concert, the appropriately titled Luke Bryan & Friends show at Bridgestone Arena. Richie couldn't be there in person. He's still recovering. So he showed up on the big screen instead, greeting the crowd before handing the moment to Bryan and Carrie Underwood, who were standing right there on stage.
"We're coming back for the 25th season of American Idol, ladies and gentlemen," Bryan told the arena, and it erupted. Underwood added the detail everyone wanted to hear: Ryan Seacrest is back too, still hosting.
Richie's return matters more than a routine contract renewal this time. His last few months have been rough. He was hospitalized in June for heart problems, then again in August. The scariest moment came on August 29 in St. Louis, mid-performance of "All Night Long," when he visibly ran out of breath and had to ask for a chair. Two days later he was in intensive care. Reports surfaced earlier this week that he'd been hospitalized again, and his representative confirmed he underwent a procedure for atrial fibrillation, the heart rhythm condition known as AFib.
Through all of it, Richie kept the Idol news close to his chest. "Some of my greatest friendships have started right here in Nashville, Tennessee," he told the crowd from the screen, before turning it over to Bryan and Underwood to make the reveal official. "That includes you, Carrie and Luke."
Bryan closed out the announcement urging aspiring singers to get their auditions in, calling the milestone season "going to be legendary." Auditions for Season 25 are already open through the show's virtual search process.
This will be the third year running with the same trio on the panel: Bryan, Underwood and Richie, who has held his seat since ABC revived the show in 2018, back when he sat alongside Bryan and Katy Perry. Underwood stepped in for Perry starting Season 23.
According to Just Jared, Season 25 will also mark a production shift, with the show reportedly moving away from filming in Hollywood, though details on the new location weren't confirmed in that report.
As for Richie's own recovery, his team says the procedure went smoothly and he's doing well, though he's taking time off before getting back to performing. He's expected to resume his King of Hearts residency in Las Vegas on October 14, picking up shows he had to postpone during his hospitalizations. Whether he's fully back on the road by the time American Idol cameras start rolling for Season 25, which premieres on ABC in spring 2027, is the next thing to watch.
