Luciana Damon’s post-surgery appearance at the 2024 Oscars wasn’t just a red carpet moment — it was a quiet act of defiance against absence.
Matt Damon revealed in a GQ Men of the Year cover interview published on Thursday that his wife, Luciana Barroso, underwent brain aneurysm surgery just one week before the 2024 Oscars — and still attended the Vanity Fair after-party. The actor, 56, described the moment as both emotionally charged and deeply personal.
He recalled how he had previously missed a major Oscar night in 2007, when Martin Scorsese’s The Departed won Best Picture. At the time, Damon was filming second unit work for The Bourne Ultimatum in Miami, with a newborn at home. He and Luciana watched the ceremony from bed, nervously rooting for Scorsese.
When he saw his friend win, he jumped up and down in excitement. But then came the final award. ‘S---, we should be there!’ he said he realized in that instant. The regret stuck with him.
Weeks later, he fielded calls from cast members and studio execs asking where he’d been. Now, in 2024, he expected to stay home again after Luciana’s surgery. But she had other plans. ‘She surprised me and got a dress,’ Damon said.
‘She remembered that the last time it happened, I didn’t do it.’ She insisted they go out. ‘She was like, “This time we’re going out,”’ he recalled. He called her decision ‘pretty f------ heroic’. The couple made it to the after-party despite her recovery being in its earliest stages.
