Madonna, 68, Carried Onstage At VMAs Amid Concern Reports

Insiders quoted by RadarOnline claim the 68-year-old seemed confused backstage even as she picked up seven Moon Person trophies for the night.

Madonna won seven Moon Person trophies at the 2026 VMAs on Sunday night. That's the headline number. But the clip everyone's actually passing around shows her backup dancers lifting the 68-year-old and carrying her onto the stage for her performance with Sabrina Carpenter and Charli XCX, and she looks like she's struggling the whole way through.

The footage has been doing rounds since the show wrapped. In it, dancers appear to toss Madonna onto the stage rather than simply help her up, and she visibly winces. One clip going around shows her being set down near a piano, which one commenter online compared to being "plopped down like a sack of groceries." Others are asking, bluntly, why anyone thought that was the way to get a 68-year-old onstage.

What's fuelling the bigger conversation, though, isn't the performance itself. It's what allegedly happened around it.

An unnamed source close to Madonna told RadarOnline, in comments picked up by celebrity journalist Rob Shuter, that she seemed "out of it" backstage, at times unsure of where she was or what came next. "This wasn't Madonna being difficult or eccentric," the insider said. "People were worried." The same source described her as looking "flushed and fuzzy" and "wobbling back and forth to her seat," adding that even her longtime team hadn't seen her behave quite that way before.

That's one insider's account, relayed through one outlet, and none of it has been confirmed by Madonna's camp or anyone speaking on record. Worth saying plainly: nobody named has gone public with these claims, and there's no statement yet from Madonna, her representatives, or VMAs organisers addressing what happened backstage.

According to the same source, the trouble reportedly started with a scheduling mess. Madonna was said to be ready to perform at 7:30 pm, only for a last-minute change to push her slot back, which allegedly left her furious. "She was ready and then suddenly furious," the insider said. "After that, everything seemed to unravel." The insider also claimed her team kept her away from others backstage afterward, framing it to onlookers as extra security rather than anything to do with her condition.

None of this stopped the Awards from going her way. Madonna picked up Artist of the Year, Best Dance, Best Film, Best Album, Best Longform Video, Best Cinematography and Best Choreography, seven wins that make her one of the biggest names of this year's ceremony by trophy count alone.
