Mammootty turned 75 this week and, for all the National Awards on his shelf, one number has stayed just out of reach. Five decades into a career that keeps reinventing itself, the actor has never had a solo film cross the 100 crore mark. Bheeshma Parvam came closest in 2022, closing at roughly 87 crore worldwide, according to figures cited by Koimoi. Kannur Squad and last year's Kalamkaval sit just behind it. Nothing has broken through.

That context is what makes this birthday different. Mammootty has two films lined up that trade observers, per Koimoi, believe could finally get him there, and they could not be more unlike each other.

The first is home ground. Mattancherry Mafia, directed by Khalid Rahman, reunites the two after 2019's Unda and drops Mammootty into a gangster drama set in Kochi's old Mattancherry quarter. Asif Ali and Naslen round out the cast. Early word pitches the actor's look as a callback to Bheeshma Parvam's stylised menace, which is precisely the film that got closest to triple digits last time. If Bheeshma Parvam couldn't quite finish the job, the argument goes, this one might.

The second is a genuine departure. Om marks Mammootty's return to Tamil cinema after a long gap, and it pairs him opposite Dhanush. A teaser dropped on his birthday introducing his character, Burma Karthikeyan, a wanted man with political connections running deep. Two minutes of footage was enough to get fans and plenty of non-fans talking about how comfortably he wears the part.

Here's the complication. Om is set to clash with Rajinikanth's Coolie 2, and that is not a small thing in Tamil Nadu. Two superstar vehicles landing on the same date usually means a split, not a sweep, and how that plays out will say as much about screen counts and distributor loyalties as it will about either film's quality. Koimoi's framing is optimistic. Whether audiences actually turn up for both, or pick one and skip the other, is the part nobody can call yet.

Mammootty isn't short of other work either. He's teaming with Adoor Gopalakrishnan on Padayatra, a reunion 32 years in the making, and backing Mela, a mass action-comedy under his own production banner, Mammootty Kampany, with director Nithish Sahadev. Neither is being talked about as a 100 crore play, at least not yet.

So the real story sits with the other two. Mattancherry Mafia and Om don't have confirmed release dates locked in stone, and until one does, the 100 crore question stays exactly that, a question. The Coolie 2 clash alone will decide plenty.
