The reveal doubles as the actor's 75th birthday gift to fans and the first real look at what he's playing opposite Dhanush in Rajkumar Periasamy's Tamil film.
September 7 is Mammootty's birthday. It's also, per a new poster from the makers of 'OM,' the day his first look from the film finally shows up.
The poster itself gives almost nothing away. Just a line, "Big M arrives on 7th September," and underneath it, a phrase that's doing the rounds without any explanation attached: "Siya Entry awaits." Nobody's said what Siya means yet. Could be a character name, could be a plot point, could be nothing at all designed to get people talking. Right now it's just bait, and it's working.
What we do know is that Mammootty's character in 'OM' has been kept completely under wraps until now. No stills, no descriptions, no hints about how big the role is or where he fits into Rajkumar Periasamy's story. The birthday timing feels deliberate. Studios don't usually sit on a reveal this long unless they're waiting for a date that means something.
And this one means a fair bit. 'OM' marks the first proper collaboration between Mammootty and Dhanush in Tamil cinema. They've technically shared a film before, in 'Proprietors: Kammath and Kammath,' but that was Dhanush popping in for a brief cameo during Mammootty's Malayalam debut decades ago. This is different. Two generations of stardom, one project, top billing for both.
A crowded ensemble
The cast list around them is stacked. Sai Pallavi and Sreeleela are both in it, along with Naseeruddin Shah and Indrans, which tells you Periasamy isn't building this as a two-hander. Sai Abhyankkar has done the music, Ezhil Arasu is behind the camera, and R Kalaivanan is cutting the film. The names further down the crew sheet read like a big-budget action production is being assembled here — Yannick Ben handling action choreography, Sandy Master on dance, Rajeevan as production designer and A Pannerselvam as art director.
None of that tells us what Mammootty is actually playing. That's the point of Monday's reveal.
'OM' opens in theatres worldwide on October 16, which gives the marketing machine a little over five weeks between the first look and release day. Expect the Mammootty poster to be the opening move, not the full picture. If "Siya" is a name we're supposed to remember, the makers are betting fans will spend the next few weeks arguing about it before they explain a thing.
