The Rams quarterback and his wife Kelly show up in a scene as the video works through its story, a woman played by Dakota Johnson slowly realising the man she's with, played by Colin Farrell, isn't who she thought. Cara Delevingne also features. Swift directed the video herself, and it was shot by Emmanuel Lubezki, the cinematographer with three Oscars to his name.
The Stafford cameo isn't as random as it sounds. The couple were at Taylor and Travis Kelce's wedding this summer, so a friendly guest appearance tracks. Still, a starting NFL quarterback turning up in a pop star's video, dancing next to Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell, is the kind of detail that gets clipped and shared within the hour.
Matt himself had no idea what was airing back home. He was in Denver, under the lights of Sunday Night Football, throwing for 390 yards and two touchdowns against the Broncos. It wasn't enough. Between Johnson's presence, Farrell's, and now the Stafford cameo doing the rounds online, the video's cast list is turning into its own story separate from the song.
What nobody's said yet is whether there's more where that came from. Swift directing her own videos, roping in actors and, apparently, an NFL quarterback for a walk-on, suggests she's treating these releases less like promotional clips and more like short films with proper casting calls. Whether Stafford gets asked back for the next one is anyone's guess. For now, he's got a Monday to think about a blown fourth-quarter lead, and a video clip of himself dancing that his teammates have probably already found.
