Maya Hawke has officially joined the live-action adaptation of Magic: The Gathering, becoming the first confirmed cast member in Legendary Entertainment and Hasbro’s long-awaited cinematic expansion of the 1993 card game. The Stranger Things alum, known for her role as Robin Buckley, will play a key part in the film, though the specific identity of her character — believed to be one of the Planeswalkers at the heart of the franchise’s lore, has not yet been revealed.
The movie is being directed by Matt Johnson, who also co-writes the screenplay alongside Noah Gardner and Aidan Fitzgerald. This marks Johnson’s first major studio feature since BlackBerry, and his involvement signals a shift toward grounded storytelling within the fantasy genre. The project is being developed as a launchpad for a broader multimedia universe, with a Magic: The Gathering television series already in the works.
Created by Richard Channing Garfield and originally released by Wizards of the Coast, now owned by Hasbro, the game has evolved into a global phenomenon spanning video games, novels, comics, and animated series. Legendary’s Chairman of Worldwide Production, Mary Parent, described the partnership with Hasbro as one built on “thoughtful caretaking” of a “singular, beloved IP,” emphasizing their intent to thrill longtime fans while attracting new audiences.
