Pankaj Tripathi and company are having a good week at the box office, even if nobody's ready to put a bow on it yet.
Mirzapur: The Movie collected an estimated Rs 16 crore nett on Monday, according to Pinkvilla, taking its four-day domestic total to roughly Rs 107 crore. On paper that's a 35 percent drop from opening day. But Monday one was juiced by the Janmashtami holiday, so the real decline is closer to 20 percent, which trade trackers consider a genuinely strong hold for a Hindi film in its first week.
The film opened across some 4,000 screens in about 1,750 locations with over 10,000 shows a day, per figures reported by Telugu Filmibeat, and has been running at roughly 45 percent occupancy. That's a wide release for a title built entirely off a streaming show that never had a theatrical audience to begin with.
Here's where the numbers get messy. Pinkvilla's day-wise math points to a four-day nett figure near Rs 107 crore, with the first week projected to land somewhere between Rs 145 and 150 crore. Telugu Filmibeat's breakdown of the Hindi version alone has it collecting Rs 28.5 crore, Rs 35.5 crore, Rs 40.5 crore, Rs 20 crore and Rs 10 crore across five days, adding up to a gross figure of Rs 135 crore that it attributes to just four days of release. The two outlets aren't reconciling their day counts or their gross-versus-nett math, so treat the exact rupee figure as a moving target until distributors confirm anything officially.
What both agree on is the direction. This thing is holding.
And yet Pinkvilla is holding back the blockbuster stamp, at least for a day or two more. The reasoning: a strong Monday hold hasn't been a reliable predictor lately. Awarapan 2 and Welcome to the Jungle both had competition eat into their runs, while Dhamaal 4 and Border 2 posted decent Mondays before finishing softer than expected. Mirzapur's Monday number is stronger than all three, and the competitive landscape ahead of it looks clean. Even a Dhamaal 4-style tail-off, the thinking goes, would still get the film to blockbuster territory. The site wants to see Wednesday's number before making the call official.
There's a budget angle worth flagging too. Telugu Filmibeat reports the film was made for around Rs 90 crore, with another Rs 10 crore spent on promotion, putting the total outlay near Rs 100 crore. If that figure holds, the movie may have already recovered its cost within the first week, going by either outlet's collection estimates.
The film released September 4 in Hindi and Telugu, built around the same core cast from the Amazon Prime Video series, Ali Fazal, Divyendu Sharma, Rasika Dugal and Shweta Tripathi among them, but with a story written fresh for the big screen rather than lifted from the show. Wednesday's trade numbers should settle the blockbuster question. Until then, everyone's watching the same chart and reading it slightly differently.
