Mohanlal has a new film, and it's called Operation Ganga. The title landed on Saturday, first as a poster on the actor's own Instagram handle, caption included: 'Operation Ganga.' No fuss, no teaser countdown. Just the name and the face.

The title itself does the heavy lifting here. Operation Ganga was the real evacuation mission India ran to pull its citizens, thousands of them students, out of Ukraine once the war with Russia broke out. Borrowing that name for a feature film sets expectations immediately. This isn't a courtroom drama or a family entertainer. It's a film built around a moment the country actually lived through, at least at some remove.

Mohanlal leads the cast, and he's not doing it alone. Arjun Rampal is in, so is Adil Hussain, and Bhagyashri Borse rounds out the principal names the makers have confirmed so far. That's a fairly loaded ensemble for a Malayalam production, and it suggests the film is being pitched beyond a single-state audience.

Vishnu Mohan directs. The production sits with Gokulam Gopalan under the Sree Gokulam Movies banner, a house with deep pockets and a habit of backing big swings in Malayalam cinema. Shashwat Sachdev, who's scored plenty of Hindi projects, composes the music here, which is itself a small signal about how wide the makers want this film to travel. Shameer Mohammed edits. What we don't have yet is a plot synopsis, a shoot schedule or a release window. The press release that broke the title kept things tight, cast names and crew credits, nothing on how closely the film tracks the actual 2022 evacuation events or whether it's a straight dramatisation at all. Given the subject, that's the kind of detail that will matter once trailers start dropping. Films that lean on real national moments tend to draw scrutiny over accuracy fast, and Operation Ganga will be no different once more footage surfaces.

For Mohanlal, this comes right after Drishyam 3, the Jeethu Joseph-directed close to that franchise. Going from a slow-burn thriller trilogy to a mission film with a multi-lingual cast and a Bollywood-adjacent composer is a fairly deliberate pivot, and it puts Operation Ganga among the bigger bets on his slate right now. Sree Gokulam Movies hasn't said when cameras roll, or where. That's the next thing to watch for.
