Main Actor Nahin Hoon started streaming on Amazon Prime Video India on September 9, closing out a run that began at Cinequest and wound through UK theatres in November last year before it finally opened in Indian cinemas on May 8.

Written and directed by Aditya Kripalani, the film pairs Nawazuddin Siddiqui with Chitrangada Satarupa in a two-hander that was shot the hard way. Siddiqui plays Adnan Baig, a retired banker in Frankfurt. Satarupa plays Mouni, an actor in Mumbai stuck in the audition grind. What starts as an online acting exercise for a film tryout turns into something more personal, and the film tracks both of them opening up as the exchanges pile up.

Here's the bit that makes this one worth a second look. Siddiqui and Satarupa were never in the same room. Kripalani shot the two of them simultaneously in India and Germany, performing opposite each other live over video call, and cut the production together across 28 days while watching both feeds from Mumbai and Frankfurt at once. It's the kind of production logistics that would sink a bigger set. An indie budget apparently made it workable.

Siddiqui took no fee for the role, something Bollywood Hungama has noted he's done before, comparing it to his approach on Manto. For an actor who's spent the last few years bouncing between streaming leads and character parts in bigger productions, choosing to work for free on a small two-hander says something about where his interest actually sits right now.

Festival run, then a quiet theatrical release

Before any of this reached a streaming platform, Main Actor Nahin Hoon did the rounds on the festival circuit and came back with hardware. Siddiqui won Best Actor at the New York Indian Film Festival. Satarupa took Best Actor (Female) and Kripalani won Best Director (Jury), both at the DC South Asian Film Festival. That's a decent haul for a film that most Indian audiences hadn't heard of until it hit cinemas here in May, distributed by Platoon One, with ReelN Ltd handling the UK release.

Kripalani, talking about the Prime Video debut, said the response has been immediate in a way theatrical runs rarely allow. "Every 10 minutes or so, we are getting a message from someone," he said, describing a steady trickle of Instagram and Facebook messages arriving while people watch. "So it feels very good to be in a time when people can reach out to you via social media while they are watching the film."

The cast beyond the two leads includes Naveen Kasturia, Ayushi Gupta, Yasir Iftikhar Khan, Vibhawari Deshpande, Meenakshi Arundhati and Aarti Desai. The film is produced by Sweta Chhabria Kripalani, Aditya Kripalani and Faizuddin Siddiqui under Mumba Devi Motion Pictures and Side Hero Entertainment.

Whether a small festival darling can hold an audience once it's just another title in a Prime Video scroll list is the actual test now. Early reactions on social media, going by what's floating around, suggest Siddiqui's performance is landing. Whether that turns into sustained numbers over the coming weeks is the thing to watch.
