Nick Fury returns — but not as you remember him. In a HYDRA coat. Skeleton frame. January 2027.
Marvel has dropped a bombshell at New York Comic Con: Immortal Soldiers, a new one-shot series set to launch in January 2027, will bring back Nick Fury — the original, skeletal, HYDRA-coated version, after years of cosmic exile. The announcement comes just weeks after Avengers: Armageddon wraps up its run, leaving the Earth’s Mightiest Heroes in disarray and public trust in tatters.
Enter the new team: Spider-Man, Wolverine, Captain Marvel, Luke Cage, Daredevil, and the newly introduced Miracleman. They’re not the headline act anymore. That role now belongs to Maximum X-Men. But Immortal Soldiers isn’t about them.
It’s about who steps into the void when no one believes in heroes anymore. And that question is answered with a skeleton in a coat. Not S.H.I.E.L.D. Not even a uniform. A HYDRA coat.
The cover art, by Ben Harvey, shows a gaunt Fury. Eyes hollow, jawline sharp, draped in the black-and-red insignia of the very organization he spent decades dismantling. It’s not just a shock. It’s a contradiction.
Fury Sr., once the architect of global counterintelligence, was turned into The Unseen during Original Sin. He lost his powers after Uatu’s return, but stayed on as a Watcher’s agent across realities. His son, Nick Fury Jr., took over Earth’s spymaster role in 2023. Now, after a decade of absence, the elder Fury is back.
But not as a savior. As a ghost in a villain’s coat. Why? What does this mean for the Infinity Formula, which both Furies have used to cheat death?
Is this a redemption arc? A betrayal? Or is it something darker, a resurrection under new command? Marvel hasn’t confirmed plot details yet.
But the tease is clear: Armageddon ended a war. Immortal Soldiers begins another. One thing’s certain. The next chapter of the Marvel Universe won’t be led by a hero. It’ll be led by a man who once stood against evil… and now wears its symbol.
January 2027 can’t come soon enough.
