That debut helped it claim the top spot at the weekend box office, not because it was good, but because nothing else in the market had anything resembling momentum. Rotten Tomatoes gave it a dismal 19%, CinemaScore slapped it with a D+, the lowest since Megalopolis in 2024, and Richard Lawson called it ‘an attractive but mostly vacuous collection of jumpy bits.’ Yet the numbers keep climbing.
In its sixth day, the film earned $1.7 million domestically, bringing its North American cumulative total to $35.2 million, down 41.4% from Tuesday’s discounted opening, but still far ahead of expectations. With the global haul now past $53.1 million, it’s less than $10 million away from surpassing 28 Years Later: The Bone Temple’s worldwide earnings.
The film is no longer just profitable. It’s a benchmark. It’s also notable that Resident Evil, which has pulled in $138.3 million domestically, is close behind, though new releases this weekend could shift the balance. Meanwhile, Aaron Sorkin’s The Social Reckoning stumbled with just $6 million, below Sony’s hopes for a film about Facebook’s darker chapters.
Mikey Madison plays a whistleblower, Jeremy Allen White a journalist, and Jeremy Strong an older Mark Zuckerberg, yes, Jesse Eisenberg’s version returns, now in a different timeline. The movie holds a 54% critic score and 71% audience rating, deemed ‘engrossing’ by David Rooney, a rare compliment in a week where most reviews were lukewarm.
Elsewhere, Chris Rock’s Misty Green limped into six theaters with $27,000. Adam Driver, Daniel Kaluuya, Rosalind Eleazar star in a film described as ‘the work of a mature director who knows what he wants to say.’ Alex Gibney’s Elon Musk doc pulled $28,000 from four screens. And NAZA, a documentary on Israel’s military operations in Gaza, earned $85,000 from 72 locations, enough to draw protests outside a Los Angeles theater.
Verity, Amazon MGM’s Colleen Hoover adaptation, dropped 56% in its second frame, now sitting at $56.5 million domestically. Heart of the Beast added $6.7 million. The real story? No one’s winning.
